Rich Scaglion (also called Rick in the antipodes) is retired from his position as UCIS Research Professor at the University of Pittsburgh, where he was Chair of the Department of Anthropology and Director of the Asian Studies Center. He’s a four-field anthropologist who specializes in the study of the Pacific Islands. His research centers around human migration and mobility in Oceania, people’s relationships with their natural environments, and the rise of social complexity. His applied work has involved customary law, legal pluralism, and sustainable development in island nations. He was Principal Legal Officer at the Law Reform Commission of Papua New Guinea and is author of numerous books and scholarly articles about Pacific Island peoples. A recent book is Polynesian Outliers: The State of the Art.
